The Story of the Alkimos

Resting just off the coast of Western Australia, the Alkimos Shipwreck has become one of the region’s most mysterious maritime landmarks.

Originally built in 1943 as the SS Viggo Hansteen, the vessel served during World War II before eventually being renamed Alkimos years later. In 1963, while being towed along the WA coastline toward Indonesia for scrap, disaster struck during rough seas. The towline snapped, and the ship drifted helplessly toward shore before running aground near present-day Alkimos Beach.

Despite multiple attempts to refloat the vessel, the ocean refused to give it back.

Over the decades, the wreck became surrounded by local legend. Fishermen, divers, and nearby residents began sharing stories of strange happenings around the ship — unexplained lights, sudden equipment failures, eerie sounds carried across the water, and sightings of a mysterious figure believed by some to be connected to a crewman who tragically lost his life aboard the vessel years earlier.

Whether myth or truth, the Alkimos developed a reputation as Western Australia’s “haunted shipwreck,” becoming part of local folklore and maritime history.

Today, the remains of the wreck continue to stand against the Indian Ocean as a symbol of resilience, mystery, and adventure.
